About

By George: Articles from the Ashland Daily Independent is a book collection of George Wolfford’s best writings covering events, people, and histories from Ashland and the Eastern Kentucky area. The book includes 100 articles and columns, spanning 40 years of writings from Ashland’s newspaper. A select few of these articles are available here on this website.

During the period George worked at the Independent, he covered five U.S. presidential visits to the area. An array of musicians from Jean Thomas to Loretta Lynn to Ricky Skaggs took music from Appalachia to the national stage. George helped his readers get to know them.  Those who led Ashland or took the city to the next level–ACC President Bob Goodpaster, E.B. Lowman I, and Sports champion Ernie Chattin, to name a few–are all included in the book.

Local histories, comprehensive reports on industry, tragedies, and commentaries from the 1960s through his Today’s Living column are included.
